Use the approved language. Choose the right category. Smile while the machine continues to operate. Feral Business is interested in the part of us that doesn't fit neatly into that arrangement. The animal in the room isn't an attempt to reject thinking or responsibility. It's the instinctual side of us that's still alive: suspicious when things don't seem right, hungry for a life that feels authentic, and wanting to scratch at a system that provides confinement as convenience.
What Does "Feral" Mean Here?
Feral doesn't just mean wild. It refers to something that once knew the rules and no longer accepts them as normal. That difference is significant to Feral Business. The project isn't based upon leaving society behind and entering an imaginary wilderness. Its songs exist among offices, screens, late night rooms, broken relationships, financial pressure, creative ambitions, and the strange performance of being a functioning adult. The feral response occurs when the performance breaks down.
Instinct as Information
Humans have learned to distrust their initial reactions. In some cases, this learning is beneficial. Instinct can be wrong.
However, constantly correcting ourselves can cause us to ignore the information our bodies were receiving before we received the explanation. Tightness in our chests. Restlessness. Suddenly needing to leave. Anger that doesn't correspond to the polite version of events. Music can contain these signals without forcing them to reach a definitive conclusion. In Feral Business, rhythm converts pressure into movement. Distortion creates a surface for annoyance. Repetition can feel like obsession, routine, machinery, or survival. The sound doesn't diagnose the listener. Instead, it creates space for the feeling to exist.
The Creature Is Not the Villain
Feral creatures appear throughout the project's visual language because they blur the traditional line between civilization and danger. A creature that is dressed appropriately can demonstrate how unnatural human systems appear from an external perspective. A creature confined within a beautiful cage can make comfort seem suspicious. Teeth can imply danger, but they can also imply protection. The creature is not necessarily the source of the problem. At times, the creature is the only character in the scene who is reacting honestly.
Music for the Friction
Feral Business is not intended to provide a simple solution for resolving modern life. Songs are not policy documents, and ambiguity is not a failure. The project allows for contradictions: wanting connectivity yet wanting isolation; enjoying technology while resenting its demands; needing stability while fearing domestication. Through its use of Darkwave atmosphere, post-punk tension, alternative rock, electronic rhythms, and biting hooks, the project allows for all of these competing elements to coexist simultaneously. Friction is helpful. Friction prevents the music from becoming a slogan.
